Some pretty good ideas in this one—I quite liked how the Roman aspects of the Gods seem to come into play—but...
My main gripes with this novel:
1) I wasn't thrilled about the writing style, which I found too simplistic, yet paradoxically maybe not fit for such a story: seemingly geared towards a middle-grade audience, while the themes and characters are for a more mature one? Also, the third person point of view didn't carry as much strength as the somewhat sassy 1st person one in the Percy Jackson series.
2) I didn't really connect with the characters. Leo was probably the one I liked most; Jason and Piper were too bland and "perfect" to my liking.
3) The way some things seemed to come out of nowhere, with only a flimsy explanation thrown in to justify why they were never mention in the PJ series.
Oddly enough, though, I think I still want to read the second one, if only to see where the whole
(show spoiler)thing is going.
